I sell quality items collected over a 40 year span. They are always priced fairly and competitively and are priced to sell. If you think otherwise, I appreciate and consider all fair offers.

The piece is unmarked (could have had a paper label originally) but the quality of the glass and caning speak to its probable provenance. I've seen one similar, but none as nice as this one!!

It's incredible that this piece even exists. I'm guessing it was a special order?

Embedded inside a clear glass teardrop is a single, very wide, loose spiral of millefiori caning, framed within an emerald green border and tapering to a wisp at the top. This might have once been the crowning glory of a grand staircase in a fine Victorian home; it's also possible this is simply the results of a master craftsman showing off his talents.

In any case, this piece is extraordinarily rare for its size, design, quality and execution. A worthy museum piece in any sense of the word.

Although offered speculation for this piece included wig stand, hat stand, paperweight, sculpture or newel post, the massive size, shape and weight convinces me that the piece is likely a newel post finial - a topper for the end of a staircase. Age of this piece is unknown, although the heyday of newel post finials may put it somewhere in the mid-to late 19th century. Including the attached base this piece stands a whopping 9 tall overall and weighs over 8 pounds! The teardrop portion is a little over 7" tall and 4" at its widest. The base measures 3 1/2 at the bottom and tapers out slightly.

(I welcome and will share any comments on my auctions). I've seen lots of Murano with millefiori and lots with spiraled canes - but never before one with a spiraled millefiori cane. The primary colors of this piece include cranberry and white millefiori caning, emerald green edging and a blue collar where it joins the base.

Bubbles and other small inclusions speak to the hand-blown nature of this piece. Please see pictures for details.

I can find no scratches on the surface, and only a few small ones on the bottom of the base. There are some some inclusions inside the glass as well as the expected tiny trapped bubbles with no post-manufacture damage. I've been specializing in quality art and antiques for the past 40 years. Thank you for your interest and for looking at my auctions. All of my auctions are guaranteed!
