Orient & Flume LIMITED EDITION DAVID SMALLHOUSE Red Poison Dart Frog on Realistic Pebble Rock Glass Base. It is one of his famous poison dart frogs sitting alertly on a base. The red coloration is one of his most striking.
The frog has black dappling on his body, and bright yellow and black eyes. What is most unusual about this particular paperweight is its base. It is rock like, rough and grainy to the touch, with reflections in the graininess that catch the light. It really appears to be rock and not glass, quite an artistic feat. Please note the polished black glass underbase, with iridescent flecks throughout the top of the'rock'.
I tried to capture this quality in my photos. Etched on the base are Orient & Flume Smallhouse 0160N62702 252/1000.It is not known how many frogs in this edition were actually produced, but each was a different color and with different style bases, each is truly unique indeed. The red frog is prized by Orient and Flume collectors, as is its unusual base. David Smallhouse now has his own studio, and his early O&F studio frogs are sought after by his many admirers. This weight measures a generous 3 and 3/8 inches across. The overall condition of this paperweight is excellent, truly a prize to add to someones paperweight collection.
