This Art Glass Paperweight is from the late William Gaskills Cherished Collection. Gaskill was a former President of the National Paperweight Collectors Association (PCA) and an avid and very astute Art Glass Paperweight Collector. After His passing, his collection was on loan (for approximately 3 years from 2006 to 2009) to the Museum of American Glass (Wheaton Village) in Millville, NJ, which is now known as Wheaton Village Arts and Cultural Center. Gaskills highly regarded and very extensive Art Glass Paperweight Collection was on display in their most prominent area of the Museum at that time. Just prior to being put on display at the Museum, Lawrence Selman of the Renown L. Selman was commissioned to do an appraisal of the entire collection. Selman is known worldwide for his expertise in the field of Art Glass Paperweights and in 2001, Selman was awarded the honor of being named by the Paperweight Collectors Association, one of the Top Ten People of the 20. Century to influence the paperweight art form. Gaskills collection was considered to be one of the largest gatherings of Antique American Art Glass Paperweights known to be in private hands. In 2009 a family member took possession of the entire collection and it went safely and quietly into storage for approximately 6 years, from 2009 to 2015. In 2016 I was very proud and honored to have had the opportunity to acquire a large portion of Mr. Gaskills Wonderful and Cherished Art Glass Paperweight Collection. Its sometimes said that the first glass makers of paperweights were from Bohemia.
Glass Maker History back in the early to mid-1800s was a bit sketchy, but its widely believed that Bohemian weights were made from 1840s to present. They made many different types of weights and most antique ones were unsigned and simply attributed to Bohemian Glass Makers. Bohemian weights also encompassed a wide geographic area of Europe, that might have covered Austria, Czech Republic, Germany, Poland and Slovakia areas by todays map. One of my hobbies is collecting Art Glass Paperweights. I'm a member of Midwest Paperweight Collectors Club as well as the Paperweight Collectors Association (PCA) which is our National Club.
